Airbus Supplies Two NH90 Tactical Transport Helicopters to Spanish Navy
Summary
**Executive Briefing**
**SITUATION**
Airbus has delivered two NH90 tactical transport helicopters to the Spanish Navy. The aircraft are expected to enhance the naval force's capabilities for transportation and medical evacuation operations. The delivery marks a significant milestone in the partnership between Airbus and the Spanish military.
**BACKGROUND**
The Spanish Navy had previously operated the NH90 helicopter, but a technical issue led to its decommissioning from service. Following a thorough evaluation of available options, the Spanish government opted to restore the fleet with new aircraft from Airbus. The delivery is part of a broader agreement that includes maintenance and support services.
**ASSESSMENT**
The arrival of these two NH90 helicopters will bolster the Spanish Navy's capacity for tactical transport and medical evacuation operations. This development is likely to enhance the naval force's overall effectiveness in supporting ground and maritime operations. However, it remains to be seen how this new capability will impact the regional security dynamics.
**RECOMMENDATIONS**
Key monitoring points include:
1. Tracking the performance of the newly delivered aircraft to ensure compliance with technical specifications.
2. Monitoring the maintenance and support services provided by Airbus to maintain operational readiness.
3. Assessing the impact of these deliveries on the naval force's overall capabilities and regional security dynamics.

Airbus Helicopters has delivered the first two NH90 Tactical Transport Helicopters (MSPT) to the Spanish Navy. The rotorcraft are the first two helicopters of a seven-unit order, part of the second phase of Spain’s NH90 program, which includes 23 aircraft. Configured for amphibious tactical missions, the MSPT variant features reinforced landing gear, naval communication and navigation systems, and automatic folding for the main rotor and tail. It can carry up to 20 fully equipped troops or a light vehicle and supports single-pilot operations in low-visibility conditions. With the arrival of these units, the NH90 is now operated by all three branches of the Spanish Armed Forces: the Army, Air and Space Force, and Navy.
